Staying Ahead with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing

There are many nursing professionals who are perfectly content with their current occupation. It’s a perfectly understandable contentment. Those with an RN have valuable medical knowledge and professional competency. However, even at this level of proficiency, there is the potential for greater knowledge and career achievement. With an RN BSN online degree, current registered nurses are able to increase their leadership roles, experience financial growth, and evolve in their effectiveness as a nurse.

Obstacles in Getting a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Obviously, whenever someone mentions “continuing education” or suggests getting a bachelors of science in nursing, there are plenty of objections. Here are the big ones.

• Time. There are few who have the time available to fit in an education around a full work schedule, mealtimes, commitments, family, friends, fun, and who-knows-what-else? It is not often you hear "I sure have a lot of time on my hands."

• Schedule. A nurse’s schedule is the least accommodating for continuing education. On top of that, consider the demands nursing degree programs have - not a great match. For nurses especially, twelve-hour shifts, late-night hours, and weekend time all combine to combat any effort to take classes.

• Finances. And unfortunately, money is a big factor. Higher education means ore money. In today's current economy, few people have "extra" money.

Overcoming the Barriers

So we have established there are barriers - some not easy ones. When it comes to getting a bachelors of science in nursing, there are ways to overcome these barriers. To start, RNs can now get their BSN through an online program. With everything from coursework, to tests to class involvement and total degree completion all available on the Internet, it is getting a little easier to see how this could work. Here’s why.

• Time. An online BSN will take up much less of your time. Time can no longer be your number one complaint as you have no commute or exact time to report to class. Another important benefit is the ability to speed up or slow down as your schedule allows. I see the time argument flying right out the window. Sure, it still takes time, but at least now you get to decide how and when to take that time.

• Schedule. An online BSN fits the schedule of anyone, even nurses. Wide awake at the end of the grave yard shift and want to go to class? Sure. Log on and get started. Maybe, as a morning person, you prefer to get a few classes out of the way with your morning coffee. Whatever your limitations, preferences, or constraints, an online BSN works with your challenges.

• Finances. An online BSN can cost less than actually attending a campus. There is no longer the need for transportation or extra enrollment costs. The savings start your very first day. The real cost factor will come when you realize that getting a bachelors of science in nursing most always means a significant salary increase for you. More education translates into more pay. Choosing not to go from RN to BSN means a career of lower pay.

Colorado Christian University challenges their students in their nursing degree programs to become compassionate and competent professionals who will greatly impact the medical field. From an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing to their graduate degree programs, CCU is arming students with tools needed to go to the top.
